Is AI/SI Enough to Sell a Book? What I Learned Building “The $300 AI Rebuild”

Painless AI Lab – A Hong Kong Practitioner’s Real-World AI Journey (Part 38)

Before I finished “The $300 AI Rebuild”, I did what most new authors do. I checked trending topics, studied what people search for, and spent too long on the cover and title.

Then the book was done, and the real problem showed up.
How do you get noticed?

My first plan had three parts.
  • Build an online hub. I set up www.ib-hk.com for search and for AI/SI answer engines.
  • Widen distribution. Amazon first, then Apple Books, Kobo, Barnes & Noble, and library catalogs.
  • Keep publishing Blog posts, then short versions on social media.

AI/SI helped with the landing page, technical fixes, images, posts, and getting the book onto the shelf. Then I looked at the dashboard.

The uncomfortable question was simple: is inbound marketing enough?

No. It is necessary. It is not enough.

The limit of waiting:
Search and AI/SI-engine optimization (SEO & GEO) are pull. You build the page, make it clear, and wait for someone to ask the question you already answered. That can compound. It does not compound this week.

A listing is not discovery. Amazon and Kobo mean the book exists in the warehouse. They do not mean anyone is in your aisle.

AI/SI also adds noise. It makes posts easy, so everyone posts. A summary of your own book, written like every other summary, disappears.

If the plan is only automated inbound, you will spend months waiting for an algorithm to save you.

The missing half
I still need a push, and it has to sound like a person.
  • Outreach, not more waiting. Use AI/SI to find a short list: niche podcasts, business newsletters, Hong Kong outlets, and solopreneur communities. Then send a short pitch written like a note, not a press release.
  • Proof of work, not promotion. People do not buy a self-published book because the ad copy is smooth. They buy because they trust the work behind it. A failed Mark Six prediction script, or a hardware order that tied up cash is more useful than another “5 ways AI/SI can help” post.
  • Direct contact. AI/SI can draft the note. It cannot reply when someone writes back. Early readers, other creators, and a few real conversations do more than another week of scheduled posts.

What Do You Think?
If you’ve launched a digital product or book recently, did relying on digital content and SEO bring in actual sales, or did you have to roll up your sleeves and do direct outreach?
