Taking a Free AI Agent Class in Shenzhen: My Hands-On Experience with Tencent’s WorkBuddy

When a friend asked if I wanted to cross the border for a free one-day AI workshop in Shenzhen, I hesitated.
I had already spent months refining workflows in ChatGPT, Gemini, and Grok. I thought my personal stack was settled.
Then he mentioned the focus of the session: Tencent’s WorkBuddy.
Most of us in Hong Kong are used to globally familiar AI tools. We rarely get a close look at how mainland Chinese tech companies build end-to-end productivity agents for local office environments.
Curious about how AI is actually being used across the border and wanting to support my friend.
I scanned my ID QR code and took the MTR up to Shenzhen last Sunday.
Crossing the Border: First Impressions
The venue sat in a newly developed district just beyond the Hong Kong border. I assumed the class would be taught entirely in Mandarin. Instead, the instructor spoke fluent Cantonese. A Tsinghua University graduate, he translated complex multi-agent concepts into everyday workplace scenarios.
The room was limited to about 20 students and felt spacious and comfortable.
More than half the attendees were young lady who appeared to work in administrative or secretarial roles. That made sense. Filing, scheduling, and routine coordination still consume hours of office time, and people in those roles are looking for ways to streamline their work and remain indispensable.
Nobody in the room was a complete beginner. Everyone already had a basic grasp of AI.
What they wanted were practical tools that could help them stay competitive in the local economy.
What Makes WorkBuddy Different? For those unfamiliar with it, Tencent’s WorkBuddy is built as an office AI agent. It does more than answer questions like a standard chatbot.
It functions like a digital assistant that can handle multi-step desktop tasks and plug directly into messaging workflows.

- WorkBuddy AI agent: takes a goal, plans the steps, runs the tools, and delivers the output
One thing that stood out in the hands-on session is that WorkBuddy comes in two versions, depending on where you work:
- Mainland version: deeply integrated with local tools such as WeChat
- International version: connects to WhatsApp, Telegram, Slack, and Discord
The underlying prompt logic and reasoning feel broadly similar to ChatGPT or Gemini. The real advantage is localization and workflow integration. You do not have to copy and paste across five open tabs. The agent coordinates the work behind the scenes.
My Takeaways from the Classroom
The atmosphere was low-pressure. Students did not interrupt much during the lecture, partly because WorkBuddy’s interface is designed to be plug-and-play, and partly because everyone was busy testing workflows on their laptops. The most useful conversations happened during the breaks.
Talking with local professionals over tea made one thing clear:

- Government and industry push: Tech companies such as Tencent and local agencies are investing heavily in practical AI literacy.
- Low barrier to entry: Free, well-structured workshops make it easier for ordinary office workers to upgrade their skills without a large expense.
- Side-hustle potential: After the foundational workshop, attendees can move into an advanced “AI Trainer” track and sit for a standardized exam. Passing it can qualify someone as a certified AI instructor in China, which opens a real path to extra income or a full-time career.
Watching how determined everyone was to adapt reminded me why I started this blog.
AI is not just a story for software engineers. It is quietly changing everyday office work from multiple directions at once.
