I’ll be honest, my eyes still light up with $ signs when I talk about this. But it’s not greed. It’s survival. I’ve lived the nightmare that makes this topic so urgent for me.
Waking Up with $300 to My Name
A couple of years ago, my world collapsed overnight. I fell into a financial trap set by a close relative, someone I trusted completely. In just days, I lost almost everything.
I woke up one morning to find my wallet drained to less than $300 USD (around $2,300 HKD). In Hong Kong, that number is terrifying. It wouldn’t even cover a week’s rent in a tiny subdivided flat, let alone feed a family.
Yet I was (and still am) responsible for supporting my entire household. The pressure was suffocating. I sank into deep depression. Every night I lay awake, staring at the ceiling, wondering how I would buy food the next day and feeling like a complete failure.
Then the post-COVID reality made everything worse.
Hong Kong’s recovery felt painfully slow. Prices for everything, from a plate of beef ho fun (乾炒牛河) at the local cha chaan teng (茶餐廳) to electricity bills. Skyrocketed! Salaries stayed flat, and unemployment lingered. No matter how many extra hours people worked, it felt like we were all running on a treadmill that kept tilting steeper.
I knew if I continued doing the same things, my family would drown. I became obsessed with finding a way out.
Why AI Became My Lifeline
When you’re nearly broke, traditional business is almost impossible. Opening a physical shop in Hong Kong requires huge capital for rent deposits, inventory, and marketing. With only $300, those doors were locked.
I started small with an online shop using minimal inventory to cover basic living expenses. But the real game-changer came when I discovered generative AI.
AI is the ultimate leverage for people with limited money.
I didn’t need office space, expensive equipment, or large capital. All I needed was:
- A basic computer
- An internet connection
- Relentless curiosity
- Learn & Practice
For the price of a few cups of coffee per month, AI gave me the combined power of a brain storming, researching, graphic designer, copywriter, programmer, and data analyst. It allowed me to create value from almost nothing and level the playing field.
Reclaiming Control
This blog is called Painless AI Lab, but the journey to get here was anything but painless. Still, using AI to build side income has given me something far more valuable than money. It has given me control.
I no longer feel completely at the mercy of a stagnant job market or rising inflation. For the first time in years, the path ahead looks clear, even if I haven’t reached financial freedom yet.
